Defender -
National Journal of the Australia Defence Association
-
Defender is the quarterly national journal of the Australia
Defence Association (ADA). Since 1983 it
has been Australia's primary journal of record for informed and
apolitical public debate
on
defence and wider national security issues. Its predecessor, the ADA Journal, had been published
quarterly since 1979.
-
Each
48-page (or more) issue of the journal includes topical
articles, informed commentary,
authorative book reviews and review
essays, and spirited exchanges in letters
to the editor, from a wide range of Australian
and foreign contributors.
-
Defender also includes a regular
tongue-in-cheek column on life at Australian Defence Headquarters at
Russell Hill ― reputedly extracted from the personal diary of the ever-observant
personal staff officer to the virtual Vice Chief of the Defence Force.
-
The
editor of Defender is
Dr Malcolm Kennedy. The editorial board comprises
Ian Bostock, Colonel Patrick Gallagher (Retd),
Professor Jeffrey Grey,
Neil James,
Dr Paul Monk and
Dr Hugh Smith.
-
The journal also
utilises advisory and review panels comprising former defence force,
intelligence, counter-intelligence and police officers; serving and
retired diplomats; and academics, scientists, engineers and former
government officials.
Index to Recent Issues:
-
The
Defender Index
provides a listing of leading articles, commentary, feature articles and
book reviews from issues of Defender back to 2001, including portable
document format (pdf) versions of articles and reviews which can be downloaded separately.
-
This does not include back issues
of the Major Furphy satirical column which is featured separately on this website.
-
While a summary of recent issues of the journal may be found in the
Defender Index, the full contents are not posted on this website
until subsequent issues are published and distributed to ADA
members and registered corporate subscribers.
Articles and
Commentary. As Australia's primary
journal of record for informed public debate on defence and wider national security issues,
Defender welcomes the submission of articles by Australian and
foreign contributors.
-
Articles submitted undergo an
academic-style peer-review process (anonymously) to assess their
currency, relevance, intellectual
integrity and general standard for
publication.
-
Authors need to check the journal's
style
guide for articles and
the ADA's
terms and conditions for the supply of content before submitting their manuscript.
Your submission of an article (or other content) or agreement to do so
signifies your agreement with these terms and conditions.
-
Identification of authors is the norm
and your name will be withheld
only where clearly justified in the public interest.
-
Electronic copies
of articles should be sent to
Defender,
together with your email and daytime and after-hours telephone contacts.
-
Material posted to the editor should be addressed to: The Editor,
Defender,
PO Box 320, Erindale Centre, ACT, 2903, Australia.
Book Reviews.
Defender is renowned for the range, quality and informed discussion
of its book reviews and review
essays.
-
Each issue
of the journal includes 8-12
comprehensive reviews and review essays by leading Australian experts on the particular
subjects of the books concerned.
-
Copies of the hundreds of reviews published since 2003,
indexed by title, author, reviewer or journal issue, can be found in
Defender's book review index.
-
Books submitted for
review in Defender should be sent to: The Review Editor, Defender,
PO Box 320, Erindale Centre, ACT, 2903, Australia.
-
Publishers also need to email a high-resolution
pdf image of the book's cover, to accompany the review, to
Defender.
-
Prospective reviewers will be assisted by the journal's
aide-memoire and style guide for
book reviews and also need to check the ADA's
terms and conditions for the supply of content. Your
submission of a review (or other content) or agreement to do so
signifies your agreement with these terms and conditions.
-
The journal's policies governing the professional, ethical and academic
standards for reviews are summarised in the book review index
and detailed in our
aide-memoire and style guide for
book reviews.
Letters to the Editor. The letters
pages in Defender are an important national forum for informed public
debate on defence and wider national security issues. They feature a stimulating and often
spirited exchange of views on
contemporary and historical topics.
-
Your letter should be kept to a maximum
of 300 words (150-250 is the ideal maximum) and avoid personal attacks.
-
Identification of writers is the norm
and your name will be withheld
from publication only where clearly justified in the public interest.
-
Only your name and state of residence
are published with the letter but you must include your name,
address and a daytime telephone number for verification when
submitting it.
-
Your letter should
preferably be
emailed to
Defender.
Otherwise it can be posted to the above address.
-
All letters are submitted on
the condition that the ADA, as publisher, may edit any or all letters and
reproduce them or authorise their reproduction anywhere in electronic form (including on this website).
Your submission of a letter (or other content) or agreement to do so
signifies your agreement with our
terms and conditions for the supply of content.
